The Opening Ceremony of the Obama Presidential Center was curated with master-class focused intelligence.
In the closing segment, when President Obama drew out the history lesson on the significance of the arch at the entrance, not to take away from Dr. Martin Luther King’s famed words, “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice,” but to return to its deeper history, coursing through the pains and perils of holding onto a dream while it may seem impossible to rationalize, was the refresher moment. By my third time watching the ceremony, it was that distilling reverberation of truth and the power of words that continued to resonate.
Michelle Obama delivered her love story to President Obama. She exalted him with an intimacy and endearment that was neither idle nor public performative praise. She avowed her love to her husband with thought and full commission, and in that moment it felt as though we, the audience, President Obama, family members, and friends alike, were all participants in something deeply personal.
As if Bono became the mouthpiece of our collective voices, his song transformed into a hymn to Michelle, carrying the gratitude and affection many of us felt but could not quite express.
Juneteenth 2026 relived a message of hope for America.
Each performance gifted us the realm, breadth, scope, and diverse landscape of the America we wish could be. Bruce Springsteen’s rendition of Land of Hope and Dreams was earthed in his belly, his soul, and his prayer. Stevie Wonder eclipsed the emotions of our collective humanity with Higher Ground.
The former Presidents, Vice Presidents, their spouses, the luminaries gathered, and the spectacle of youth fervored and energized all contributed to the moment. There was evidence of advancing years among many who have helped shape our national story, and at the same time there was youthful energy reminding us that the story continues. Every performance brought significance to the occasion and was both pause and cause for celebration. Loved me, some Marc Anthony.

And like many, my visceral initial reaction to the OPC structure was questioning. It was President Obama’s speech that centered the moral, philosophical, societal, and emotional construct of this walled edifice. As I looked more closely at the imagery of the building, I discovered the visual of the words wrapping around the highest portals of the structure.
You may not see it immediately. I did not. At first, I thought the design conveyed a stained-glass effect translated into stone and steel. Then, in a glimpse, I saw carvings of words. Looking again, I realized these were not artistic impressions or decorative inscriptions.
These were President Obama’s actual words.
The speech itself is embedded into the architecture.
Not displayed on a plaque. Not hidden inside a gallery exhibit. Not reserved for those who make it to a particular room. The words are encrypted into the walls of the building itself, becoming part of the structure, part of the landscape, and part of the experience.
The inscription is drawn directly from President Obama’s 2015 remarks commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery marches and begins with the declaration, “You are America…” before unfolding into a reflection on possibility, responsibility, democracy, bridges yet to be crossed, and new ground yet to be covered.
